Katie Gutierrez Painter earned a BA in English from Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, with additional training in creative writing and editing and publishing from the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is now a Creative Writing (Fiction) M.F.A. candidate at Texas State University.

Prior to founding Legacy Editorial Consulting in 2007, Katie spent equal amounts of time as a creative writer, publicist, and journalist. Working in publicity with Phenix and Phenix Literary Publicists -- an Austin literary publicity firm responsible for catapulting 27 books to bestseller status since its inception in 1994 -- she became intimately familiar with marketing diverse genres of literature, and has adapted some of those publicity strategies for Legacy's diverse corporate clients. Between 2005-2007, she worked as a reporter and editorial assistant for People magazine, where she reported on news stories that consistently caught the attention of a nation.

Today, Katie is a regular contributor to business trade publications such as American Builders Quarterly, Green Business Quarterly, Hispanic Executives Quarterly , and Growing Wealth . Her fiction and creative nonfiction can be seen in Open Windows Anthology (Ghost Road Press, 2008), Chicken Soup for the Soul (Health Communications, 2008), The Scruffy Dog Review and Narrative magazine. Through Legacy, she has collaborated with dozens of emerging and established authors to prepare their work for publication, and most clients' books can now be found on Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. She has also co-written two books: the engaging Duckey and the Ocean Protectors with John Sexton, and the innovative, revealing Failure Party , with Corey Blake. Katie can't believe she's lucky enough to do what she loves every day.

Whether your business is banking, real estate, information technology, retail, public relations, nonprofit, or anything in between, your written materials need to be more than sufficient. They need to speak with your voice and values, and be written with your unique offerings and clientele in mind. At Legacy, we offer (but are certainly not limited to) the following services:

Website copy: In our web-based world, any company serious about attracting and maintaining customers should have a website. It can't, however, be just any website. We will work with you to create website copy that is so customized, informative, and search engine optimized that you'll wonder (as we do!) how anyone ever does without it.

Blogs: Blogs are a compelling and modern way to build your brand by sharing your expertise with current and prospective clients. We will discuss your objectives and desired tone and scope of your blog, and then create as many posts as you require. (We recommend between three and five per week.) Visit our Portfolio page to view blogs we've created for satisfied clients!

Newsletters: You need newsletters that unify employees and keep customers informed of the latest products, achievements, and events within your industry. We can help create timely newsletters in a variety of styles, in print or electronic mediums. Ask about our options!

Press releases: With experience both as publicists and journalists, we will create press releases that capture and retain media attention, while also best representing your product, service, or event. Press releases are also a wonderful way to keep your clients informed of updates within your company, so if you don't yet have a "news" section on your website, you might think of adding one!

Articles: Whether for internal company circulation, popular or trade publications, or professional journals, we can ghostwrite, co-write, or edit articles of any length and style. We will ensure that anything you submit for publication is engaging, accurate, and free of embarrassing grammatical or typographical errors.

Electronic correspondence: Your e-mail messages to current and prospective clients are crucial for building trust, cultivating relationships, and propelling projects forward. With quick turnaround, we can help ensure that your correspondence projects an image that directly represents your brand and core values.

Rates: $55 - $95 per hour depending on project; alternatively, ask about our monthly retainer fees.

There is nothing more crucial to the success of a book than the editing process. It is during this stage that you should most challenge your writing, while celebrating its moments of success. From concept development to a final proofread, we will help you create a polished manuscript ready for presentation to agents and publishers.

   Proofreading:

You have read and reread your manuscript so many times that your words have begun to acquire that “ring of the inevitable” that seasoned writer Annie Dillard cautions against. You have enlisted the help of professional and/or nonprofessional editors to help you develop character, enliven dialogue, structure chapters, and assure you that your plot does, indeed, make sense. All you’re missing is a final, impartial pair of eyes to correct for any stray grammatical, spelling, punctuation, and typographical errors. This service, then, is for you, and includes:

  Line-by-line copyedit
  Unlimited telephone conferences
  Turnaround time of 7-14 days

  Full Content Edit:

You have completed your first draft, or perhaps your second or third, and would like a full, detailed editorial critique of your manuscript. You would like to ensure that the plot is compelling and consistent, characters are three-dimensional, dialogue is realistic, setting is believable, and the point of view used is the most effective way to tell your story. Or, for nonfiction, you want to ascertain that organization is smooth, sources are quoted and cited correctly, facts are inscrutable, and voice is engaging. You would also like a final proofread for all things grammatical. In short, you want a final draft. A full content edit will get you there. This service includes:

  5-15 page editorial critique
Line-by-line corrections/suggestions on manuscript via Word's "Track Changes" feature

  Up to three editorial "rounds"

  Weekly or biweekly telephone conferences

Final proofread for grammar, punctuation, spelling, typos, etc.

Turnaround time of 2-7 months, depending on length and stage of work

  Coaching:

This unique service is for the writer who has a great idea, and possibly an outline or partial draft, but could benefit from support throughout the writing process. With coaching plans individually tailored to each writer and project, goal and budget, this service includes:

One-on-one consultations to develop original idea into feasible outline Aid with detailed plan for character, plot, voice, and setting for fiction; concept development, organization, and fact sources for nonfiction All elements of full content edit

  All elements of proofread

  Co-writing:

Perhaps you're a busy CEO, a first-time parent, a physician, a student, or a politician; or maybe you're an artist, entrepreneur, or athlete. Maybe you're none of these or even all of them. At Legacy, we firmly believe that everybody has a story to tell--and we will put as much time, care, and enthusiasm into helping you tell your story as if it were our own. Co-cowriting services include:

One-on-one consultations to develop original idea into synopsis and detailed outline
In-depth plans for character, plot, voice, and setting for fiction; concept development, organization, and fact sources for nonfiction Carefully developed timeline of chapter delivery dates Expertly crafted chapters All elements of full content edit
  All elements of proofread

Rates vary per project. Please use the contact form to set up a free consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!
